#2 - El Remate

El Remate is a small wood-carving village located on the main road between Tikal and Flores. It’s a quiet, tranquil, off-the-beaten-path town, and a gateway to Tikal National Park. There are budget-friendly, modest, and rustic accommodations.

Nestled on Lake Petén Itza, it’s just across the lake from Flores, and you can travel by boat rental, although it’s not recommended. Instead, opt for the shuttles that travel around the lake throughout the day

Staying here is a down-to-earth experience in a friendly local community. If you find accommodations in town you’ll be closer to restaurants and shops. While lodging on the the lake’s northeast side is more immersed in nature where you can birdwatch and get up close and personal with Howler monkeys.

If you’re into hiking, you’re in luck! There are a lot of scenic nature trails here including the Cerro Biotope Cahui. After a day on the trails, go for a refreshing swim off the docks in the crystal clear waters of Lake Petén Itzá.
